Integrated into the lush hillsides of Nosara, Costa Rica, the Maloca Dome is a space for gathering, movement, and reflection. Conceived as a home for yoga, meditation, and ceremony, it invites people to reconnect with nature, with community, and with themselves.

The structure is crafted entirely from bamboo and was designed by IBUKU in collaboration with LOOP Design as the local architect of record. Rooted in traditional craftsmanship and elevated through advanced bamboo engineering, the Maloca embodies a dialogue between ancestral building knowledge and contemporary design. The result is a structure that feels both innovative and deeply connected to place.

❋ use of renewable local materials
The structure primarily uses bamboo as the main structural material, a rapidly renewable resource that supports ecological harmony and reduces environmental impact compared to conventional materials.
❋ integration with the natural landscape
The sancturay is designed as an organic extension of the hillside, positioned to respect existing features such as the large tree and to harmonize with the environment instead of dominating it.
❋ low-impact construction methods
The dome emphasizes construction techniques that minimize disturbance to the surrounding landscape, helping preserve the natural ecosystem while building the structure.
❋ passive environmental design
Strategically placed openings and architectural elements allow natural light, views, and airflow to shape the interior atmosphere, reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating a dynamic indoor environment.
